Perhaps the only other intelligent life out there is machine life?

Posted in Old Diary by Felius on the May 4th, 2001

I’ve been reading an article on the dangers of nanotechnology, robotics and genetic engineering (Why the future doesn’t need us). This led me to wonder if it may be that the only sort of life we’d find in the universe would be machine life.

That is, by reaching the level of technology to allow interstellar travel, we also reach the level of technology required for intelligent machines. It may be that once intelligent machines evolve, they find a way to overcome (or out-compete, in an evolutionary sense) their organic creators.

So the only life that we (as humans rather than machine offspring) are likely to meet is machine life.

A scary thought..
