A few wedding photos
I said ages ago that I’d put up a seperate section of the site dealing with stuff related to our wedding, but as usual I haven’t got around to it yet. However we did scan a handful of the photos that were done by our photographer, so here are a couple.
We plan to scan all of our photos in, but we have a couple of hundred to do. We also have no scanner, except at work, so this may take a while. Time to get a digital camera, I think..
Cricket season finished and another sporting injury
Well, the cricket season has finished. The Sandy Bay Swallows played their last game on Saturday, against Campagnia at Risdon Vale. It was definitely the worst we’ve played in a while, but credit must go to Campagnia who would have been formidable opponants even if we were in top form.
We lost the toss and Campagnia elected to bat first. They punished us, scoring 7/350 after the full 50 overs. It was a very fast outfield, and I was very slow on the day managing to stop only a handful of balls that came my way before they reached the boundary.
I was pretty demoralised by the end of our stint in the field. It was the worst day I’d had playing cricket so far. When my turn came to bat, our team had only scored 90-something runs. I went out there ready to just get it over with.
Somehow I managed to not get out off my first ball. Not only did I not get out, but I before the over was done I’d managed to hit the ball fairly solidly and score a run.
This left me at the other end of the pitch as the over finished, leaving me on strike again. The bowler I was facing didn’t have much of a runup, but he seemed pretty fast to me. This doesn’t mean much, seeing as every bowler seems fast to me, including the spinners. He was definitely faster than others I’ve faced though.
I managed to hit a few of his balls, but they were stopped in the field before I could run anywhere. I was taking a few swings and missing as well. At one point a ball hit the pitch to my leg side, and moved forward a bit to let it go past. The umpire called a wide, and I thought “this is easy!”. The next time it happened I tried to do the same thing, but was a lot less successful. I don’t know if I should have just stayed there, or I didn’t move far enough, or I managed to turn as I moved - but this time the ball smacked right into the back of my thigh, just above the knee.
I felt it touch the thighpad, but it must have only glanced off it slightly. Judging by the bruise I’m guessing I’d turned away from the ball and that it hit me pretty straight on. Oh well, I guess I learned something.
I’m not sure what, probably something about getting out of the way of fast moving objects - a skill I should have picked up already at this stage of my life, you’d think.

Ouch. I’ll try to move faster next time.
I’ve been busy..
I haven’t made many diary entries lately. This is only partly because I haven’t had much to say, and mostly because I’ve been very busy.
I’ve been busy at work, doing a mixture of documentation and web development.
I’ve been busy on the weekends - we won cricket last week, stomping on Marquis, although they’re bad losers and are protesting.
Lou and I had Kris round for dinner last night, and we have Paul and Jo for dinner tonight. I have cricket on saturday (our last game of the season), and I’m playing golf on Sunday. So I’m pretty busy outside work as well.
I’ve been playing with Adobe Photoshop and ImageReady at work. I really miss having Sammi around to do graphics stuff for me, but it’s about time I learned to use a graphics program again. The last one I knew how to use properly was Deluxe Paint IV on the Amiga. In fact my first personal web page had all the graphics done using DPIV on my Amiga, then they were transferred using a special program to an MS-DOS disk so that I could read it on a Mac at uni and upload it to a Unix webserver.
Kids get it so easy these days
.
Anyway, I’ve been having fun with ImageReady. I’ve been meaning to improve the look of our site since I put it up, because the current look was only meant to be temporary. Now I think I have a good enough understanding of the program to make some changes around here, though whether or not they’ll be an improvement remains to be seen.
